The Roman Republic existed from 9 February 1849 to 3 July 1849. The Republic was established after Pope Pius IX fled to Gaeta (click for geospatial location) to the protection of King Ferdinand II of Naples (click for geospatial location), following the assassination of the papal Minister of Justice.
