On 26-27 August 1883, Krakatoa (also known as Krakatau) (click for geospatial location) erupted in Indonesia. The eruption, culminating in four huge explosions the morning of August 27th, triggered tsunamis which killed over 36,000 people, was heard 3,000 miles away, and generated worldwide atmospheric effects.
